“Tehillim - Psalm 19”

Just before the study, I would like to commence with one more important quote from the book of Yahoshua - Joshua Ch 1:7-8. (JPS-1917).

Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obey the entire Torah My servant Moshe has given you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Introduction to Tehillim - Psalm 19:15:

This wonderful verse is very much a compact prayer that models the ‘integration of speech’ and ‘heart’, ‘worship’ and ‘ethics’. It asks that both what we say and what we think be pleasing unto אֱלֹהִים – Elohim (God), and it Names אֱלֹהִים with the following intimate titles, יְהוָה – ‘the LORD my Rock’, and ‘my Redeemer’, each shaping how the petition is understood. The verse is ideal for personal ‘devotion’ and ‘liturgy’!

Tehillim - Psalms 19:15. (JPS-1917):

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before Thee, O יְהוָה - the LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer”.

יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן אִמְרֵי-פִי, וְהֶגְיוֹן לִבִּי לְפָנֶיךָ
יְהוָה צוּרִי וְגֹאֲלִי

Phrase by phrase exegesis:

Let the words of my mouth”, speech is offered as an act of worship; the petition recognizes that spoken words can bless or wound and asks that speech be consecrated.

and the meditation of my heart” there being an inner life that matters, and having private thoughts and intentions are as significant as public speech. The verse refuses a split between “Outward piety and inward disposition’”.

be acceptable before Thee” - acceptability is relational: the goal is not merely moral perfection but being pleasing to אֱלֹהִים, aligned with the Divine will and His presence!

“O יְהוָה - the LORD” the covenantal Name grounds the petition in אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s faithful presence.

my Rock” evokes stability, ‘refuge’, ‘and trustworthiness’; the petitioner asks that words and thoughts reflect dependence on אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s strength!

and my Redeemer” introduces the theme of ‘rescue’ and ‘restoration’; even imperfect speech and thought are placed under אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s loving ‘redeeming care’.

A practical use, daily prayer:

Use the verse as a morning or evening prayer, together with the thought for the day.

This site was originally created, for those who desired to return to our blessed and wonderful faith. Thus be wise and work on your faith and pray at least two or three times a day (if possible) and always seek אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s guidance! For interest, as you may have discovered, this site has become very much a teaching one!

Remember what אֱלֹהִים - Elohim, blessed be He, said the following, via a number of our prophets...

Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָהthe LORD of hosts”. Mal’a’chi - Malachi 3:7. MEC).

He is the one who gave us our Life!

May the שָׁלוֹם - Shalom = Peace of צְבָאוֹת- יְהוָה= the LORD of hosts. be with you, and please always uphold our blessed שַׁבָּת - Shabbat, as well as the מוֹעֲדִים - Mo’a’dim - Feasts, and continue saying your daily תְּפִלָּה - Tefeelah’s (Prayers) and regular בְּרָכָה - Be’ra’chah’s (blessings) before food and drinks, etc!

שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם - Shalom Aleichem - Peace be with you!
