“Tehillim - Psalm 91”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

Introduction:

Tehillim - Psalm 91: Chapter 1, contains a very special prayer for Divine protection, describing the one who dwells in the ‘shelter of the Most High’ as being safe from various dangers such as ‘snares’, ‘pestilence’, and ‘destruction’.

This Tehillim - Psalm emphasizes that אֱלֹהִים - Elohim (God), blessed be He, will deliver those who are faithful, and provide ‘angelic protection’, and they will witness ‘the downfall of the wicked’.

Question: Who wrote this Tehillim - Psalm?

Moshe - Moses as the author: Tradition links Psalm 91 to Moshe because it immediately follows Tehillim 90, which is attributed to him. This perspective suggests Moshe composed it while the Israelites were in the wilderness, living under אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s protection.

Let us now read this amazing Tehillim - Psalm:

Tehillim - Psalm 91:1. (JPS-1917 version).

1.   O thou that dwellest in the covert of the Most High, and abidest in the shadow of the Almighty;

2.   I will say of יְהוָה - the LORD, who is my refuge and my fortress, my אֱלֹהִים, in whom I trust,

3.   That He will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4.   He will cover thee with His pinions, and under His wings shalt thou take refuge; His truth is a shield and a buckler.

5.   Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flieth by day;

6.   Of the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor of the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7.   A thousand may fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; it shall not come nigh thee.

8.   Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the recompense of the wicked.

9.   For thou hast made the LORD who is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation.

10. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.

11. For He will give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12. They shall bear thee upon their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and asp; the young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under feet.

14. ‘Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known My Name.

15. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him, and bring him to honour.

16. With long life will I satisfy him, and make him to behold My salvation’”.

Key themes of the verses:

Divine protection:

This beautiful Tehillim - Psalm opens with the declaration that אֱלֹהִים is a ‘refuge’ and ‘fortress’, and it promises deliverance from the “snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence”.

Unwavering safety:

It reassures us that despite a thousand falling at one’s side, “it shall not come nigh thee”.

Angelic guardians:

אֱלֹהִים will give His angels charge to keep and bear the person up so they do not strike their foot against a stone.

Triumph over evil:

The Psalm includes a verse that the protected person “shalt tread upon the lion and asp; The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under feet”.

The promise of salvation:

The final verses include אֱלֹהִים - Elohim’s promise to answer, be they in ‘trouble’, ‘deliver’, and ‘satisfy’ with long ‘life’ those who set their love upon Him”.

We have so much to look forward to, as long we remain faithful Hebrews and we should reject the Zohar based Kabbalah and Talmud, etc, as well as all the humanistic writings of certain ancient rabbis. The truth is that only the Torah / Tanakh is the whole Word of אֱלֹהִים - blessed be He.

Remember the following truth from our beloved Scriptures!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם (the LORD your Eloleichem) which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

However, the above commandment has been severely broken by rabbis of the past as they have both removed and added their own laws, and thus we have been living with many untruths. Wake up Israel, we must stand by the original Word of our beloved אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם קָדוֹשׁוֹ - Baruch Shem Kadosho - Blessed be His Holy Name! Amen.
