Please Note: On this site I will show the four letter blessed *“Memorial Name” of the
Almighty in Ivrit - -
Y-H-V-H, which we usually pronounce as “Adonai” or “HaShem”.
*“This is My Name forever,
and this is My memorial to all generations.” Shemot - Exodus 3:15.
The verses below are taken
from the JPS version, being the “Jewish Publication
Society” from their English version.
With Rabbi Reuven Ben-Avraham.
I believe that the primary text of our Jewish
tradition, even the ‘Shema’ itself, enjoins us as Jews to
study the Torah. By
faithfully reading and gaining a deeper insight of our Torah study will be
rewarded for it will lead to keeping the Commandments. This could well be an
oversimplification. As for some rabbis, reading the Torah is clearly a value in
itself. Nevertheless, the citation at the end of this short study will allude
to the greatest reward of all: By studying with a deeper insight and if at all
possible with and in the presence of children, we Jews will ensure the ongoing
study of Torah and our Jewish heritage. For we are clearly told to do so;
“And thou shalt love thy Elohim with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” Devarim - Deuteronomy 6: 5-7 (JPS version of the Torah).
Because the Torah is the
touchstone of the Jewish people, we Hebrews are often called “the people
of the Book.” The Book being of course is the Torah, the Five Books of
Moshe - Moses. But the Torah is so much more than just one book. It can also refer to all of our Sacred
literature and learning. Thus it
is so important that we study the blessed Torah because Torah study leads us to
be stronger, which will lead us to the observance of upholding the Mitzvoth as
well as the other Mitzvoth, such as the “Aseret
Hadibrot - – The Ten
Commandments.
In the first paragraph of
the Shema,
which is derived from Davarim - Deuteronomy 6:4-8, we are charged to
express our love for Elohim, blessed be He, through constant study,
“When thou liest down, and when thou risest
up”. Such study has the
potential to bring the people into a closer relationship with Elohim. There is
no doubt that Torah study sweetens our lives. To
emphasize this sweetness and in children especially, it was found that in
Eastern Europe children used to begin their study of Hebrew with letters that
had been written in honey. As they
learned the letters and enjoyed the honey, they also learned that the study of
Torah was sweet!
We find the instruction
to study Torah wherever we turn in our tradition. Torah study was encouraged
not only to sharpen one’s mind, but also to serve as a guide for living a
moral life. The logic goes this way: One who takes Torah study seriously will
most likely choose the right path in life. For this reason,
the Mitzvah of Torah study will encourage all other commandments. It
has been said “These are the things for which a person enjoys the
dividends in this world while the principal remains for the person to enjoy in
the world to come. They are: honoring parents, loving deeds of kindness, and
making peace between one person and another, but the study of the Torah is
equal to them all”
I pray that your world will stand on three
things: 1. on Torah, 2. worship of Elohim, blessed be
His Sanctified Name, and 3. loving deeds of kindness and your reward
will be abundant!
May … “ bless thee, and keep thee;
Make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee;
lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace”
