Remember the following truth from our beloved Torah!

Ye shall NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command youNEITHER SHALL YE DIMINISH FROM IT, that ye may keep the commandments of יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם - the LORD your Eloleichem, which I command you”. Davarim - Deuteronomy 4:2. (JPS-1917).

“The Torah of Elohim”

With Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens, PhD.

I was asked me recently - “What is the Torah really all about?”.

As always I am delighted to share the beauty of our Hebraic (Jewish) Torah. I do this especially when non Hebrews ask it from me! I pray that it will richly bless you!

The Torah is a sacred text, beyond any other:

The Torah is one of the most significant religious texts in the world and it is a sacred Scripture that contains the foundation of creation, the events of Avram – Abram and their eventual story as well as the Hebraic ‘law’, ‘ethics’, and our blessed beliefs!

The word Torah means “instruction” or “teaching” in Ivrit (Hebrew) and is also known as the first five books of our Hebrew Tanakh being the name of the entire of the Hebrew Scriptures.

Whilst the Torah contains the following Books; Bereshit - Genesis, Shemot - Exodus, Vayikra - Leviticus, Be’midbar - Numbers, & Devarim-  Deuteronomy.

What we will read in the blessed Torah is what was revealed unto Moshe - Moses by יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ - the LORD Eloheycha (God) on Mount Horeb well over 3,000 years ago. The Torah was then written by Moshe whilst under Divine inspiration, and it is considered the most authoritative and sacred text in all of the Hebraic faith! It is a unique document that combines ‘religious’, ‘historical’, and legal aspects, providing guidance on how to live a righteous and a holy life!

The First book of the Torah:

And that is the book of בְּרֵאשִׁית - Bereshit - Genesis which describes the creation of the world, the first humans, and the history of the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Hebrew people, including ‘Avraham - Abraham’, ‘Yitzchak – Isaac’, and ‘Ya’aqov – Jacob’. It also introduces the concept of ‘monotheism’, the belief in the ‘One and only אֱלֹהִים (God), which is the cornerstone of Hebraism. Sadly, most of the world does not realise, that the faith of the Hebrews (also known as; Judaism) is the very first and the oldest faith on the earth!

The Second book of the Torah:

Is the book of שְׁמוֹת - ShemotExodus, which narrates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land, led by Moshe - Moses. This book also contains the עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדִּבְּרוֹת - “Ten Commandments”, being a set of ethical and moral guidelines that have even influenced the Western law and culture.

The Third book is:

וַיִּקְרָא - Vayikra - Leviticus outlines the laws of ‘sacrifice’ and the ‘holiness code’, and the regulations for the ‘priests’ and the ‘Temple service’. It is a book of laws and rituals that provides instructions on how to worship אֱלֹהִים and maintain purity.

The Fourth book is:

בְּמִדְבַּר - Be’midbar - Numbers which recounts the wanderings in the wilderness of the Israelites’ for 38 years wandering, plus 2 years stationary preparing to enter the Promised Land. It also includes an amazing story of ‘Balaam’, a non-Jewish prophet. Balaam who is a central figure in the narrative Numbers 22-24, he was a non-Israelite prophet whom King Balak of Moab hires to curse the Israelites. However, instead of cursing them, ‘Balaam’ ends up delivering four poetic blessings instead, in fact some of the most beautiful in the Torah.

The Fifth and final book of the Torah is:

דְּבָרִים - Devarim - Deuteronomy, contains a recapitulation of the events that took place in the previous four books, as well as a farewell speech by Moshe before he would pass away, but was permitted to view the land of promise from atop a mountain. However, this book emphasizes the importance of following אֱלֹהִים - Elohim commandments and provides a clear vision of what it means to live a righteous life!

The Torah is not just a historical document or a set of laws; for it is also a source of inspiration and guidance for Hebrews (and others) all over the world. Its teachings on justice, compassion, and morality have influenced the development of Western civilization and continue to shape Hebrew identity and culture.

Yes, the Torah is in reality the central part of the ‘Tanakh’ being the whole of the Hebrew Sacred writings, which contains ALL of our blessed Hebrew Holy Scriptures! as there is no other writings that came from אֱלֹהִים יְהוָה - the LORD Elohim (God)!

The Tanach:

The Tanakh consists of 24 books, divided into three sections: the “Torah” (5 books), “Nevi’im” (8 books), and the “Ketuvim” (11 books).

Theere is of course just one powerful ‘Torah’, as I already states is the first five books of the Tanakh and it is considered by ‘Hebrews’, ‘Christians;’, and ‘Muslims’ for it to be the foundational scriptures to their respective faiths!

In the Hebraic community the Torah is without a doubt the most sacred of all Elohim’s text and it is the basis of Hebraic law, ethics, and theology!
