With
Rabbi, Dr. Reuven Ben Avraham-Goossens,
PhD.
I was asked me recently - “What is the Torah really all about?”.
As always I am delighted to share the beauty of our Hebraic (Jewish) Torah, and I pray that it will richly bless you!
The Torah is a sacred text, beyond any other:
The Torah is one of the most significant religious texts in the world and it is a sacred Scripture that contains the foundation of creation, the events of Avram – Abram and their eventual story as well as the Jewish law, ethics, and all our beliefs!
The word Torah means “instruction” or “teaching” in Ivrit (Hebrew) and is also known as the Pentateuch, being the first five books of our Hebrew Tanakh being the entire of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Whilst the Torah contains of; Bereshit - Genesis, Shemot - Exodus, Vayikra - Leviticus, Be’midbar -
Numbers, and Devarim - Deuteronomy.
What we will read in the blessed Torah is what was revealed unto Moshe - Moses by יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ (the LORD God) on Mount Horeb well over 3,000 years ago. The Torah was then written by Moshe whilst under divine inspiration, and it is considered the most authoritative and sacred text in all of the Hebraic faith! It is a unique document that combines religious, historical, and legal aspects, providing guidance on how to live a righteous and holy life!
The First book of the Torah:
And that is the
book of Genesis which describes the creation of the world, the first humans,
and the history of the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish people,
including Avraham - Abraham, Yitzchak -
Isaac, and Ya’aqov - Jacob. It also introduces the concept of
monotheism, the belief in the one and only אֱלֹהִים
(God), which is the
cornerstone of Judaism. What most in our world does not realise, that the faith
of the Hebrews (Judaism) is the first and oldest faith on the earth!
The Second book of the Torah:
Is the book of
Exodus, which narrates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt
and their journey to the Promised Land, led by Moshe.
This book also contains the עֲשֶׂרֶת
הַדִּבְּרוֹת
- “Ten Commandments”, being a
set of ethical and moral guidelines that have even influenced the Western law
and culture.
The Third book is:
Leviticus
outlines the laws of sacrifice and the holiness code, and the regulations for
the priests and the Temple service. It is a book of laws and rituals that
provides instructions on how to worship אֱלֹהִים
(God) and maintain
purity.
The Fourth book is:
Numbers which
recounts the wanderings in the wilderness of the Israelites’ for 40 years
and their preparation to enter the Promised Land. It also includes an amazing
story of Balaam, a non-Jewish prophet. Balaam is a central
figure in the narrative Numbers 22–24, he was a
non-Israelite prophet whom King Balak of Moab hires
to curse the Israelites. However, instead of cursing them, Balaam ends up
delivering four poetic blessings instead, in fact some of the most beautiful in
the Torah.
The Fifth and final book of the Torah is:
Deuteronomy,
contains a recapitulation of the events that took place in the previous books,
as well as a farewell speech by Moshe before he died, but was permitted to view
the land of promise. However, this book emphasizes the importance of following אֱלֹהִים
(God’s) commandments
and provides a clear vision of what it means to live a righteous life.
The Torah is not just
a historical document or a set of laws; it is also a source of inspiration and
guidance for Hebrews all over the world. Its teachings on justice, compassion,
and morality have influenced the development of Western civilization and
continue to shape Jewish identity and culture.
Yes, the Torah is
in reality the central part of the ‘Tanakh’ being the whole of the Hebrew
Sacred writings, which contains ALL of the Hebrew Holy Scriptures!
The Tanach:
The Tanakh consists of 24 books, divided into three sections: the Torah (5 books), Nevi’im (8 books), and Ketuvim (11 books). These books are counted correctly, however it is very differently than the Christian Old Testament, for example, the books of Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, and Ezra-Nehemiah are each counted as a single book, and the twelve Minor Prophets are also treated as one book.
However, it is
only the powerful ‘Torah’, being the first five books of the Tanakh
are considered by Hebrews, as well as by Christians, and Muslims for that
matter, to be foundational scriptures to their respective faiths!
In the Hebraic
(Jewish) community the Torah is without a doubt the most sacred of all
Elohim’s text and it is the basis of Hebraic law, ethics, and theology!
